The feature movie "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" was filmed in several locations near Asheville, including many days in downtown Sylva in May 2016. The movie was released in November 2017 to immediate acclaim. Congrats for winning four Golden Globes in January 2018: Best Actress (Frances McDormand), Best Drama Motion Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell) and Best Screenplay of a Motion Picture (Martin McDonagh). It's nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture. They will also filmed near Black Mountain and in Maggie Valley.
Many locals enjoyed watching the filming on Main Street. Above, Sheriff Woody Harrelson restrains Deputy Sam Rockwell. Woody was very accommodating for photos and chatting with fans between takes.
In downtown Sylva, several buildings had their facades transformed for locations in the movie, including the local newspaper "The Ebbing Herald" and the Ebbing Police Department complete with patrol cars out front. Sightseers gathered on nearby street corners to watch the action and meet some of the stars.
Jackson County Filming Locations
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is about Mildred Hayes, a 50-year-old woman (Francis McDormand) whose daughter is murdered. She goes to war with the town police (Sheriff Woody Harrelson), because she thinks they are more interested in torturing black people than getting justice. She rents three billboards in the town to tell her story - hence the movie name.
Welby’s sales office for billboards was on the second floor of 582 West Main (notice missing windows ready for filming). Asheville and the western North Carolina mountains have been the film locations for many movies. See our list of movie locations in Western North Carolina.
